Democracy?

Just like London buses...you wait for ages and then 2 come along almost at the same time.

I have been pondering this week on democracy. How can you do anything else in the lead up to the least democratic election of the most powerful man in the world's so-called leading democracy? CNN has had me ranting at the screen on a number of occasions as they ask everyone around the world whether they want Obama or McCain.

"They can't vote!" I scream at the presenters. "It doesn't matter what they think...."

But then the idea hit me. Wouldn't it be a whole lot more democratic if everyone else WAS allowed to vote. First, in America, the President, who probably still is the most powerful man in the world, despite my wishes to the contrary and the approaching takeover of that position of the Emporer of China, or whatever they have there as top dog, would be chosen by all the people in the world who are impacted by the decision. Brainwave!

But extend the idea further to every other country. There would be no Mugabe and no Adinajab, would have been no Saddam or Hitler or Pol Pot. OK, I know a number of these weren't elected anyway, but a serious number of the very bad leaders would have never had the power to inflict so much misery on the people in their country. Sometimes people need to be saved from themselves by having decisions taken out of their own hands.

I imagine a huge on-line voting facility, a bit like the Eurovision Song Contest but without TW and the annoying songs and block-voting for the Lithuanians. We'd have to limit the candidates to natives of the country being voted for, otherwise Arnie really would end up as US President and Borat as the leader of Kazhakstan...

But imagine it. I think it's brilliant - an instant end to poor leaders across the world. But then I suppose everyone always thinks their own ideas are brilliant...

Living in Germany but not being German means I'd get to vote here. As far as I can see there are no politicians worth voting in. So I think I'd probably vote for Nena. Who can forget her appearance on Top of the Pops singing 99 Red Balloons? What better representative of this fine country?

So who would be British PM if we applied this, do you think? Who would the great people of this world vote in as our leader if we had no say in it ourselves?

Oooh Moose - nice to see you back and in fine form. And what a question.

My immediate thought is David Beckham. He's probably one of the few people who would be instantly recognisable around the world. And I can just see Posh opening the front door of No 10 wearing curlers and dressing gown a la Cherie Blair! Heaven help us all ...

Amanda said...

Good one Moose, Now I have to say I think that it would be someone big in music, film or sport, someone internationally recognised - I would go with Music - Mick Jagger or Simon Cowell (he seems to be gaining world recognition), Film - one of the Dame's Dench or Mirren, or Sport - Nick Faldo or Colin Montgomerie (thinking that lots of countries enjoy golf), Beckham or Sir Alex Ferguson (football).

On a different note do you think that most countries around the world see the Queen as our leader? I reckon either she would run away with it or, maybe, one of the Princes - William or Harry.

Hmmmmm, thought provoking nonetheless.

Happy Monday afternoon to you all!

Hooray!!! Welcome back Moose! Sorry it took a little while to catch up but I've not been on here too much. Glad that you're enjoying the personal trainer. I've had one for almost a year now, he really pushes me and I work far harder than I would on my own. Saying that I get to the gym now 4 or 5 times a week these days so I feel far more positive about myself.

As for on-line voting worldwide... much as I think the idea has merit unfortunately I think the masses would be looking to vote for their favourite "celebrity" which could be catastrophic... just imagine who we could end up with. Right now we'd have president Lewis Hamilton but then next week we could have the next King of the jungle.

My vote would go to Jeremy Clarkson.

Can I throw in another one or two suggestions, and I know they possibly aren't allowed to get the job on nationality grounds but ...... Gob Beldof or Boneo!!

Personal opinion but anyone who wants the job should automatically be banned from getting it!

Another couple of thoughts James Whale or Jon Gaunt, but other than that Jezza Clarkson gets my vote, with Hamster and James May as deputy's, so that they can take the P*** out of him still!

Moose, honey!!! You are missed!

I have a note from my doctor explaining my absence (shamefull!) from the friendliest blog on the block! How is Germany going honey? And the book? Congrats on the new job!! Will that be in Germany too?

So are you doing or receiving the coaching? Sorry - all these questions, but, like I say, you are missed! And you have personal training too?? Wow! You must be half the Moose you were!

I’m going to watch the election coverage tonight - should be interesting!!

Regarding the so-called recession - as usual I think the media has made far too much about it, but hubby and I are one of many we know who are in dire straits because of it all. Will maybe go into more depth another time, don’t want to drag the mood down, but we are still not sure if we can keep our home. I don’t know about folk starving but we have to seriously consider whether we can afford to run a car in the Highlands with £1.10 per litre of petrol.

Anyhow - we will survive!

Thank you for the congratulations! Niamh is thriving and I’m ever so grateful for the love, support, prayers and Reiki of our beloved bloggers!! (I will have to return later to catch up with everyone’s comments!)

Ooooo - could you imagine what it would be like if everyone could vote on the elections in the US?! And on to the rest of the world!!? Do we actually have anyone worthy of voting in as PM here!??

Well, I have a baby lass threatening to sick my shoulder again, and a wee lass being a minx, so best go.

Huggles all round!!

Susan

PS Click my name to see my blog with photos of the baby lass who has just sicked me right down the front!!

Morning blog friends!

It is a huge day with the new president of the USA. I don't think we will ever see this sort of celebration for a UK leader or indeed any other country around the world. It just shows that when the people put their mind to it they can make a difference. However he will have a major job to live up to the expectations of the country who have just voted him their 1st black president. Just because he is a black man doesn't mean that he will be great president. I wish him all the luck in the world (because I beleive he'll need it). Congratulations Obama!!

"Hello I'd like some information on a patient, Mrs Tiptree. She was admitted last week with chest pains and

I just want to know if her condition has deteriorated, stabilised or improved? "

''Do you know which ward she is in? "
''Yes, ward P, room 2B "

" I'll just put you through to the nurse station.

''Hello, ward P, how can I help? "

''I would just like some information on a patient, Mrs Tiptree, I was wondering if her condition had deteriorated, stabilised or improved? "

''I'll just check her notes. - I'm pleased to say that Mrs Tiptree's conditioned has improved. She has regained her appetite, her temperature has steadied and after some routine checks tonight, she should be well enough to go home tomorrow. "

''Oh that's wonderful news, I'm so happy, thank you ever so much! "

''You seem very relieved, are you a close friend or relative? "

''No, I'm Mrs Tiptree in room 2b. Nobody tells you f**k all in here... "

Hi All, how lovely to see you still here!!! Its been a while, too long some might say, its been a busy year this year and one that i hadnt entirely anticipated.

Wont go in to the details other than to say its been good for me work wise, tho massively challenging. Me and him in doors have had a good year together and the mancub goes from strength to strength. He is in particular excited about the prospect of becoming a big brother mancub as I am 29 weeks pregnant and expecting a little sister for him. Maggie Dilys is due on 11th Feb and we are all excited to meet her.

The only downside to the last few mths is that him in doors has been made redundant, not ideal at anytime and particularly stressful with me about to go on mat leave and only getting SMP whilst Im off, but resolute as ever he has decided to go it alone and set up his own business doing project management. He has the skills, contacts and the luck of a declining market for the big consultancies (hence his redundo!), it would seem they all want smaller consultancies with lower overheads to do their work for them so fingers crossed the new year will start with some more exciting times - im so proud to see him take action and not admit defeat at a time when he could so easily have been beaten by things. Lets hope his attitude pays off with work and a bright future.

Congratulations to Susan, so happy that it all worked out well and that despite the sick, you have a beautiful girl. No doubt you feel very blessed.

Hi to everyone else, lovely to see you all here and a special hello to Moose, good to know you are still pondering all that should be pondered.

Maybe see you again soon guys, have fun and cheers.

Amanda said...

Congratulations Anna! How wonderful, hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well and Maggie Dilys doesn't give you too much trouble before making her appearance!
Good luck to your other half with his new business venture. Times are tough there is no doubt about that but as long as there is love and good health in your family it goes a long way to seeing you all through the tough times.

ChrissieS and I had a lovely day on Wednesday, chatted non stop, ate, drank, shopped and then chatted some more! Thanks Moose, all those months ago you sent us each others emails and because of this we have developed a special and real friendship.

Have a good weekend one and all.

I'm sure we've all seen these before but thought they might make one smayle:

1. Two antennas met on a roof, fell in love and got married.
The ceremony wasn't much, but the reception was excellent.

2. A set of jump leads walk into a bar. The bartender says, 'I'll serve you, but don't start anything.'

3. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted.

4. A dyslexic man walks into a bra.

5. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm, and says: 'A beer please, and one for the road.'

6. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other:
'Does this taste funny to you ?'

7. 'Doc, I can't stop singing 'The Green, Green Grass of Home..'
'That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome.'
'Is it common ?'
'Well, It's Not Unusual.'

8. Two cows are standing next to each other in a field.
Daisy says to Dolly, 'I was artificially inseminated this morning.'
'I don't believe you,' says Dolly.
'It's true; no bull!' exclaims Daisy.

9. An invisible man marries an invisible woman.
The kids were nothing to look at either.

10. Deja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before.

11. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day, but I couldn't find any.

12. A man woke up in a hospital after a serious accident.
He shouted, 'Doctor, doctor, I can't feel my legs !'
The doctor replied, 'I know you can't - I've cut off your arms !'

13. I went to a seafood disco last week...and pulled a mussel.

14. What do you call a fish with no eyes ?
A fsh.

15. Two fish swim into a concrete wall.
One turns to the other and says, 'Dam !'

16. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were a bit cold, so they lit a fire in the craft.
It sank, proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it.

17. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel, And were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories.
After about an hour, the manager came out of the office, and asked them to Disperse.
'But why,' they asked, as they moved off.
'Because,' he said, 'I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer..'

18.. A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption.
One of them goes to a family in Egypt , and is named 'Ahmal.'
The other goes to a family in Spain ; they name him 'Juan.'
Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother.
Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal.
Her husband responds, 'They're twins ! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal.'

19. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time,
Which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet.
He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet,
He suffered from bad breath.
This made him –

A super-calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Hope all's well with anyone who's lurking.

Very good Jollygit, xx

What about this one for now......

On arriving home, Norm was met at the door by his sobbing wife, Cheri' who tearfully explained, "It was the druggist. He insulted me terribly this morning on the phone." Norm immediately drove in to town to confront the druggist and demand an apology.

Before Norm could say no more than a few words, the druggist hollered, "Now, just a minute, you hold on! Please just listen to my side of it... This morning the alarm failed to go off, so I got up late. I had no breakfast and hurried half dressed, out to the car, only to realize that I had just locked the house with both house and car keys inside.

I had to break a window to get my keys. Then, driving a little too fast, I got a speeding ticket. and then three blocks from the store, I had a flat tire. When I got to the store there was a bunch of people waiting for me to open up, and I started waiting on them, and all the time the damn phone was ringing off the hook."

The druggist continued, "Then breaking a roll of nickels against the cash register drawer to make change, I spilled them all over the floor. I got down on my hands and knees to pick up the nickels; the damn phone was still ringing. When I came up I cracked my head on the open cash drawer, which made me stagger back against a showcase with bunch of perfume bottles all of them fell to the floor and broke.

Meanwhile, the damn phone is has not stopped ringing for a second and when I finally got to answer it. It was your wife, Cheri' wanting to know how to use a digital rectal thermometer... and honest Norm, all I did was really tell her!"

Keep smiling

To the rest of you - a big hi from me and I am up for a party if you fancy!

A x

PS - to keep the smiles going here is a funny from me - sent by a male friend:

After being married for 42 years, I took a careful look at my wife one day and said, 'honey, 42 years ago we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10-inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 19-year-old gal.

Now I have a $500,000 home, a $45,000 car, nice big bed and plasma screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 61-year-old woman who isn't hot. It seems to me that you're not holding up your side of things.'

My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 19-year-old girl, and she w ould make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, sleeping on a sofa bed, and watching a 10-inch black and white TV.

Aren't older women great? They really know how to solve your mid-life crisis!

Happy Friday one and all,

Thanks Amanda, time will heal what is going on right now (as will you good wishes) but I think it will be a very long time! :-(( Still life goes on and we need to make the most of it! :-)

Anyway I thought as a few jokes were appearing on here again I would add another ……just because I can! :-)))

Here goes………

One morning, the members of a farm family were coming to the kitchen for breakfast. Just as Junior seated himself, his mother told him he was not going to get anything to eat until he went to the barn and fed the animals.

Irritated at this, he stomped out the door and headed for the barn. As he fed the chickens, he kicked each one in the head. As the cow bent down to start in on the fresh hay he had just put in the stall, he kicked it in the head.

He poured food into the trough for the pigs, and as they started eating, he kicked them in the head. He went back to the kitchen and sat down again.

His mother was furious. "I saw what you did, so since you kicked the chickens, you’ll get no eggs for breakfast. And since you kicked the cow, you’ll get no milk. And no bacon or sausage because you kicked the pigs." Just then, the father came down the stairs and nearly tripped on the family cat. On impulse, he kicked the cat off the stairs. The boy looked at his mother and asked "Are you gonna tell him or should I?"

Keep smiling,

Keith

I do love the CE blog, but I have to say some of my happiest blogging days was on Moose's blog. I felt I could come on here and just "be myself" and chat about all sorts without feeling that I was "hogging" the blog.

Have a think about it, and perhaps we could all get together after the summer holiday period - what do you think?

Moose: if you ever read this, I really do think of you often. I wonder how you, Mrs Moose and Mooselets are doing.

Also, it was great to read what Moose had to say on a daily basis - he's a clever guy, our Moose!
