Looking at the Charles River...

Hi y'all!

I am here and finally online after much fiddling and eventually giving in to paying the hotel $10 a day for using their wireless network.

Have had a great day...so far. Although it's my usual time for blogging, it's only 6pm here and I still have a number of plans to delay the onset of sleep and therefore hopefully negate the impact of jetlag.

Weather on the M25 was severe this morning and it took my maximum allowable 2 hours to get there. Good conversation witht he taxi driver who may well feature in the book now. The usual extremely long lines at check-in (and later at passports and security and the gate and then the second check in at the gate to finally get a seat allocated). Why is it that all air travel related activities seem to be weighted towards efficiency for the airlines and away from customer service?

So I ended up iin the very back row, left thinking until the very last minute that I'd have a spare seat next to me. The very last passenger to board turned out to be my neighbour. But he was great and I had a very in depth philosophical discussion about life, God, the universe, evolution and molecular biology with him. He was German so I slipped in a few words and shocked him suitably!

Read some of my book, one of three I purchased on a threefer offer specifically for this trip, and watched a movie. And then we were here. Hot and sunny when I arrived but it's gone steadily downhill since then, although it has now stopped raining so I can see the river and Boston University beyond.

I have to admit to being very stinky when I got here and was really looking forward to a shower. Imagine my dismay when my room wasn't ready. But then I guess it was only 12.45 here. I drank coffee while they got housekeeping to fix up the room, then showered and headed out for the University. The nice people at the Barnes and Noble store - I correctly guessed that slipping into the conversation that I'm writing a book would elicit both excitement and friendly help - sold me a book about the Uni (written by students for students) and recommended a campus tour, telling me exactly where I need to go to do that. And because they are 7 days a week, my plan is to hit there tomorrow. I sat in their Starbucks and made some notes. I already feel that I have some additional research material that will make the book better - from the colours of the stripes on the buses to the hairstyle of the barista, and from the bike lock attached to the railings but completely devoid of a bike to the three trust-fund babies discussing boyfriends and dates.

I've called home on the old Skype - what a great invention that is! - and now am gearing myself up to go visit the gym. I'm going to eat in the hotel tonight because I know that by the time I've eaten and drunk a beer (or two) I will only be fit to collapse straight into bed, hopefully to sleep until a reasonable time in the morning. But if not, I guess I can always do some writing if I wake up at 3am.

Morning Moose!

Great to hear from you. You're trip sounds great. My gosh - you're a proper writer, aren't you, what with the research and all.

I'll look forward to the next installment.

P.S. Meeting up with Matt?

Yo Moose - glad to see that you had a succesful journey. I hope the trip does what it's supposed to. Don't you just hate it when people come in last and spoil that smug extra seat next to me feeling on planes???

I once had a nuightmare jouney between Catania (Sicily) and Rome whereby I reckon at least 1/3 of the worlds population attempted to get on one plane. It was frightening and very hot, and I didn;t want to look the worng way at anyone incase they were the mafia!

Have just driven through a small flood to get to work, it was about a foot deep and I had a bit of a bow wave going on, that's scary too, expecially when a lorry comes the other way and his spray goes over your roof!

Take care out there people

Morning everyone!

Have just updated my little blog site if anyone's interested. There's some silly piccies and stuff.

Jo, know what you mean about the bow wave thang... managed to break a car with one of those on an off road day!

Well hi there y'all too!

Glad you got there safely Moose, although it's probably nearly time for you to come home again by now! The book is gonna be coming on a storm now that you can fully describe a barista's hairdo. I always find the lack of trichological reference in a book very disappointing. Did he/she have a 'Pob', or is there some super-new-fabby cut that hasn't made it to the shores of Blighty yet? How exciting.

In the meantime, I have been going steadily downhill on my trusty old boyfriend in the rain, and am currently about to slip into a German.

So, you have a nice day now

Hellooooooo Moose!

What a lovely surprise to find you here! I didn't get a chance to read the blog over the weekend.

Hopefully you managed to avoid jetlag as usually it works quite well on the outward trip to the U.S., but I hate to say it, it's a different kettle of fish when you get back!

I can only guess at how many intresting people you are going to meet - hope you are having a fantastic time! May I ask - what is a Skype? Obviously something in the family of technology!

With regard to having an empty seat beside you on the plane, I once travelled to America the day after Thanksgiving and the 747 was almost empty. There must have been about 70 people on it! I had an entire section to myself and it was bliss! (sometimes I can be a wee bit anti-social!).

Happy Monday to all - hope everyone is o.k.

Caroline - a month off work - how fantastic! Enjoy your break and hopefully you will come back fully charged!

Ooooh I thought everyone had skype by now! www.skype.com It's saved us a fortune in iternational phone calls over the past couple of years. Don't know what we'd do without it now. It's an internet phone company that enables you to make free calls pc to pc.

Hope that helps

Morning All!

Well, that was an eventful weekend... one I never wish to repeat - but hey ho - wasn't all bad and got that thing done that will drive my mum mad!

Weekend started with special friend getting a call from his mums neighbour, saying his mum had had a fall! Turns out she ran herself over with her electric scooter thingy and has a broken ankle and badly bruised ribs! Sat was slightly better. Did the thing, then went to visit the lady in hospital (first meeting!) and can happily report she's in excellent spirits and what a fab old bird she is too! In her 80's and mad as a hatter!

Nice meal later, followed by Snatch. Now I'm not into Gangster movies, but special friend has decided to educate me. It was so funny, I was really surprised. Brad Pitt had me in fits.

Went to Chatsworth Sunday and had a lovely walk, the only dampener (quite literally Smashie)was the rain, but we can't have everything. Also visited a shopping place and in one shop, heard someone speaking EXACTLY like Brad in Snatch!!!! Yes, it was a Pikey and he really did speak in the same way! We had to leave the shop....

Came home and shortly after, someone knocked on the door. Opened it to find a very angry teen on the doorstep looking for my daughter (boy trouble). As she was extremely wound up, I told her my daughter was out, that she'd be back later and that she should come round then. She went ballistic! Shouting, screaming, swearing, banging on the door when I shut it - trying to get in etc. So I went outside to warn her I'd call the Police and she attacked me! Straight up. No word of a lie. She punched me in the face and head several times.

I didn't hit her back (How could I - she's 16?), although I think that if I had, I'd have knocked her out. I was very, very angry and when I lose my temper, I really lose it, which is why I don't, if you see what I mean. The kids were inside the house. My son was hanging out of the front window screaming at her to leave his mum alone, and my daughter went mad and tried to get out of the house when the girl called me a fat slut. I've heard worse; my daughter was incensed, not just because of the violence, but because the girl had called me fat! Bizarre.

The Police came shortly after she'd scarpered. They arrested her later and came round to get my statement. Whilst the Police were here, one of my daughters friends rang to tell me that the girl in question's father had phoned her and asked her to speak to me to get me to drop the charges. Naughty, very, very naughty.

I'm not dropping the charges. The girl has to realise that there are laws we must all abide by and that attacking someone for no apparent reason is outside of those laws and the boundaries we, as a society, must abide by.

Apparently, she's been excluded from school and is a well known trouble maker in this area. I hope that being locked in a cell will have given her a much needed short, sharp shock.

As for me, I have a cracking lump on my temple, a lump on my cheekbone, the corner of my eye, my head and my eyebrow. Consequently, I'm working at home, as the Elephant Man look doesn't really do much for me.

I am so sick of all the crap. I have been to the Abbey this morning and have actually prayed for strength and courage.

I have good friends and great family (even though they're all abroad at the moment), so we'll all be fine. All the same, I really do hope things will take a turn for the better.

Am considering 'making' my daughter stay in Crete for the whole of the summer hols. I think some distance will help her gain some perspective and also get her away from some of the more unsavoury characters she has become associated with of late.

Caroline - have a great month off - lucky you!

HL - going down on your boyfriend? That's not for this Blog, surely?

Take good care all,

S xx.

Sammie I hope that you find the strength to cope, in fact I'm certain you will do. Don't forget that we are here to lean on in times of need.I agree that you shouldn't droip the charges, why should you. In fact it may be the one thing that makes the girl realise that she can change her future..... Hope you were well looked after yesterday and continue to be on the mend this week.

Well done for not losing it with her though, I'm not sure I could have shown such restraint. As for your daughter being involved with unsavoury characters I can but worry that my time will come and the fact that I was a vile indifferent teenager who was quite difficult to parent will come back to haunt me!

:o) Jo

PS - I dreamt I had my baby last night - at home - on my own. It was pain free and she was a she!

Great to hear from you Moose. Hope the trip is going well. I know (vaguely) what a skype is, but what on earth's a barista? Is it legal?

Talking of legal - is Hazel allowed to say that about her boyfriend in a public forum? How was the German?

And Sammie - what a thing to happen! Well done for not whacking her back - I'd probably have flattened her. Stick with it and don't drop the charges - she needs to learn soem boundaries. Hope your swellings subside soon.

I'm not a fan of gangster movies either, but I love Snatch. Brad is hysterical, if a tad incomprehensible.

Back later

Oh dearie dearie me. Have just read my comment back.

It was SUPPOSED to say: In the meantime, I have been going steadily downhill on my trusty old German bicycle, and am currently about to slip into in depth philosophical discussion about the rain, with my boyfriend.

Golly. The previous comment would have got me into the Naughty Corner without thinking wouldn't it!?

But EFF ME SAMMIE!!!!! and duk me too. You go girl. I am so incensed on your behalf, and huge credit to you for not retaliating. I have no idea how I'd have coped - I doubt if I'd have thought about her age if she'd have been flying at me...
Will be sending you a bit of reiki shortly...but in the meantime Hugs and Kiszxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

With regard to gangster films, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Badgers is my favourite (me and my friend nearly got asked to leave the cinema because we were laughing...apparently you aren't supposed to laugh at black humour?) and Layercake is SUPERB, as is Human Traffic, and then we get to Sexy Beast...which is a whole different kettle of Winstone...

Odd, really. I abhor violence in 'real life'...and I can't stand Westerns either...

Thank you for your time.

ps Jo, that had to be a lovely dream!

ps Don't tell him your name, Pikey!

lyndyloo said...

Sammie- That's apalling! Hopefully you might help her to understand rules a bit, though if her parents are asking for charges to be dropped it sounds like a lack of discipline at home might just be the culprit. Take care of yourself and be thankful that both of the children are so supportive of you. I know I'd have been thrilled to spend the summer hols abroad instead of here.

Sammie - what on earth?!! How you didn't whack her straight back I'll never know ..... well done for managing to restrain yourself - not sure I'd have been so strong!

You absolutely mustn't drop the charges - the cheeky sod! No wonder the daughter's turned out to be such a little s**t. Ooh, I'm getting really angry on your behalf now.

Needless to say, we're all here for you and send much love, hugs and Arnica cream for yer bruises.

jollygit xxxxx

BTW - would your daughter see spending the summer in Crete as a punishment? If she doesn't want to go, I'll go in her place xx

Moose said...

Sammie - well done for not retaliating. I'm sure if you had done so, you may have come under more pressure from yourself and others to drop any charges. It's just not worth it. Although I have to say she sounds like the sort of girl that a night in the cells and an assault charge probably won't fix. They have programs in Utah for kids like her...

Barista = poncey bloke with pink mohawk that makes coffee

Skype = thank you for not charging me a small fortune to talk to my wife for ten minutes.

Chatted in the bar last night with a guy and his son from New York for hours...was really nice to have some company. The son has made a diary entry for 2 years time to search for me and my book on Amazon!

Am off to do my campus tour today - the office was closed all weekend. My feet are blistered and hurting from all the walking I'm doing but that's got to be good for me...I need to offset the calorific contents of my huge breakfasts somehow...

Anonymous said...

Sammie - what a complete nightmare for you. You were so sensible not to hit back, because you would be the one in the dock (so to speak). These kids have no restraint and can't begin to understand what control is. I'm not making excuses for what that girl did to you, but it's almost guarateed that this behaviour is the norm in her life.

As for sending your daughter away for the summer - I so understand. It's a tough one. It's o.k. for me to say "weather the storm" but it's quite another thing to actually do it.

Yesterday, I had a huge fight with my daughter - really over nothing, but her indifference to everything just makes my blood boil. I was roaring at the top of my voice and swore at her which just about caused my husband to demand a divorce. Two horrible hours passed before I spoke to my daughter and it was just awful. I woke up this morning and thought - I am never doing that ever again, life is so precious, so fragile, we just don't know what lies ahead, even in the next five minutes. I spoke to my daughter this morning and we have agreed that we will BOTH count to 10 in future (to be fair, we've tried this before!) and we'll try to stay calm.

I came into work today to hear news of a really good friend who had an accident at the weekend - he's in a coma and will probably die - and this just reinforces how I was feeling this morning.

Sammie - you are doing such a wonderful job with your children - you just have to hang in there because there is nothing else for it. But I do support you if you send your daughter away - in order for her to get some perspective. Once we reach the age of 16, we have to realise we are responsible for our actions. I really do wish you the strength to do what you have to do.

Sorry if I've gone on too long.

C xx

Chrissie and Sammie - I'm taking my hat off to you both, as it can't be easy being a parent these days.

Life IS precious but we just can't avoid the day-to-day stuff which can overwhelm us. My thoughts and prayers are with you both, and also to Chrissie's friend - what a dreadful thing to have happened.

Jollygit,

Thank you for your words. My friend was in a car accident late on Saturday night and we've just heard that he is severely brain damaged. It is sad beyond words - he is one of the fittest, happiest guys on the planet. We are praying for him of course, that's all we can do, but things look very bad.

Thanks for being here.

Chrissie - we're all here for each other, which is what makes this blog so special. I could cry for your friend, I really could ...

I'm sending in a note from me mum as I won't be here tomorrow or Wednesday. I've got a friend over from Canada who's ending her trip with a few days down here in Kent, so we're spending tomorrow on the beach (hmm, maybe not) and I'm driving her to Heathrow on Wednesday. It could all get a bit tearful as I won't see her again for a couple of years.

Hope Moose is enjoying his trip, and love to you all.

Hello everyone.

Thanks very much for your supportive comments. I had a tear in my eye reading them!

Re: summer hols - I'm taking the kids over and leaving them there when I come back after two weeks. The current plan is for the kids to stay for another two. However, as previously said, I may arrange for just me laddo to return, leaving the teen from hell with my dad. The village is in the middle of nowhere, with no rotten kids in sight! Punishment indeed.

Chrissie - the reason we get angry with our kids is because we love them and we also have the benefit of many more years of experience. Stay strong, your daughter will love you for it - eventually!

I'm so sorry about your friend. I'll light a candle for him next time I'm at the Abbey.

Jollygit - a tearful goodbye means a very happy reunion next time you're together!

Moose - so glad your trip is going well. Never mind about the blisters, you'll be able to rest your feet on the long flight home!

HL - glad you cleared that one up for us! Is it Wednesday you move? Also - saw Layercake last week and enjoyed that one too.

Jo - what a wonderful dream! When's your due date?

For everyone else not mentioned - I love you!

Peace all,

S xx.

Thanks, everyone, for today. I did mean to say to you Jo, re: your dream - how lovely! OF COURSE it will be pain-free when you give birth! Well either that, or it's gonna hurt a wee bit! And whether it's a boy or girl - your heart will belong to that wee person - you're done for! No matter what you may read here, it's a wonderful adventure!

Morning all

I hope everyone is feeling better today. You were right, dreaming that I had the baby was lovely but I was sooo upset as I wasn't prepared and had no clothes or blankets whereas my sister has everything perfectly organised! However the fact that baby was a pink one redeemed the situation somewhat!

As for my due date - This pregnancy seems to be lasting forever but you have all known about as long as I have! The baby's not actually due until 2nd October!!!

Am working from home today as have a physio appointment later...All hail sofa and laptops! In fact, I've already got more done than I would normally in a whole day at work!

Chrissie, thoughts and prayers with your friend.

Sammie - Teen from hell will probably kick off regardless of your decision on summer holidays, take everyday as it comes.

Hazel - How's the German?

Well, every day seems to bring some other form of drama - Mr S and I were at Casualty (not the tv programme!) at 8 o'clock this morning! The story started on Sunday night when Mr S closed the car door on his leftleg. Not really recommended. I thought it looked really bad, but the brave hunter would have none of the "get to A&E" chat. Last night, he said the leg was quite sore. I took this to mean the leg was REALLY sore, so I had a good look at it (I'm so squeamish!). It was starting to take on a charming shade of black. He promised we would go to A&E first thing this morning. I lay awake all night worrying about him having blood poisoning. This morning, Mr Happy decides he's too busy to go to hospital, but after dealing with vital business this morning, he would go in the afternoon. I said - "look, I'm not your mother, I can't make you do anything, but just for the record some poor woman recently stubbed her toe, ignored the fact that she needed treatment and has since died of septicemia". Hence the visit to A&E this morning! The leg was on the brink of infection and Mr S is now on antibiotics, has boxes of plasters and must not shower for the rest of the week! Pleasant, eh?

So, how's YOUR day going?!

Dear All

Due to some extremely inconsiderate parking I couldn't get my car out this morning. I had to take photos, and now I have the malarkey of phoning a F+rd garage to find out the costs of and blah blah blah etc. I fortunately had the services of International Badger Rescue, and a rather delishus burly chappie from over the road who were able to move the offending veehikle and I was able to proceed evechually, to work.

So I was late.

However, despite another vile letter arriving in the post today, I suppose I'm getting off quite lightly.

On the home front, we are picking up the keys tomorrow evening (well, we are at the moment anyway, I am certainly not counting les poulets) from the estate agent in the pub of our choice. How sociable.

Jo...not as good as the French...

ChrissieS...sponge baths...

I'm just going to sit in the Naughty Corner with my feet up I think. Save me the bother of keep going back and forth I think...

DD, hope it's not really that bad babe xx

Hello Lovely People

Sincere apologies for my absence!

What a time you are all having, sending you all HUGE {{{hugs}}}

Sammie – I admire your self control! Your daughter will see the errors of her ways. Having you as a role model, things will turn around for her. As for the “yob” who attacked you she deserves the punishment coming to her and we can only hope that she takes the life line that is being given to her and does something positive.

Chrissie S – I cried when I read about your disagreement with your daughter, I hope
all is well again xx It reminded me of a time I had a similar situation with my Mum,
at one point I had my back to her while I was being really rude (which was really unusual because I was an angel as a child and adult – might be hard to believe but it’s true) and as I turned around and saw the look of hurt on her face she said to me, Mary
I can’t believe you have just spoken to me like that – I just threw my arms around her
and gave her the biggest hug I could, told her how sorry I was and how much I loved
her and then the two of us cried buckets…….My Mum and I were so alike, we were either laughing together or crying

I’m so so sorry to hear the sad news about your friend, I will remember him in my prayers xx

Poor Mr S, I hope he is well soon xx

DD- I hope everything will be ok for you, take care and please come back soon xx

Jo – I loved your dream about the baby xx Lots of love to baby, October will be here before you know it :o)

Hazel Love – Good luck with the move xx Wish I was nearer to lend a hand xx
Shall I bring your lunch to the naughty corner :o) Hazel I just want to say a big thank you to you because despite the upheaval you are going through you always manage to find time to keep us entertained

Moose – Lovely to hear from you, sounds like all is going well. Have a great time xx

MfR – Hope you and Mrs MfR are having a fun filled road trip :o) xx

Susan S, EG and Gaby – haven’t seen you for a while, hope you are all well. Lots of love, missing you xx

Jollygit, Caroline, Anna, Analog – hope you are all well. Sorry to anyone I have missed, it’s not intentional xx

Have a good day, I hope you are all safe from the awful weather some areas are having xx

MWK and Analog - good to see you both!

Mary - thanks for all your good wishes and for telling us your wee story about your mum. We have all hurt our mums at some time - it's just the way it is!

No change on our friend. He is being kept in a coma which is what "they" do to try to let the brain heal a little and then they can see the damage. It's surreal, really it is.

Analog - I love your "select as appropriate" take on the blog - it is very difficult to keep up with everything!

Jo - re: your earlier comment on your pregnancy taking forever - I think it's zooming past (but then, I don't have the discomfort)! Just this morning I was thinking that by the time everyone in our office has been on holiday, and then we are having our office day out on 31st August, there will only be THREE salaries until Christmas! Trust me, October 2nd will be here before ANY of us have completed our ante-natal classes - we'll have to get a move on!!

Hazel, good to see you are still around, pet lamb! Good luck with the move and make sure you are fairly stocked up with liquids to keep you going!

C xx

P.S. Moose, is today your last full day in America? I know you said you were away for six days, but I wondered if that included your travel time? Hope you are having the time of your life!

Just while I remember - a couple of things.

Lyndyloo - thanks for coming back to me yesterday re: Skype. Sorry to be a complete thicko, but I don't know how one would speak pc to pc!! I guess Skype is not for me and I just have to use my Virgin Media phone!

Sammie, thinking of you and your bruises - you and Mr S could trade stories! He tells me his leg is "agony" - it could be a long evening that lies ahead! Hope you are o.k. - you had a really bad experience.

Jollygit - hope your time with your friend is going well - it will be sad to say goodbye at Heathrow tomorrow. I really hate goodbye's and like everyone else, I have had too many of them!!

MfR welcome back! So looking forward to hearing all about your trip.

And so we return.

What a ride!

Arrived in this morning, so still in la-la land. Having just seen Timbo beat Moya I am keeping everything crossed for the weather tomorrow as we have Centre Court tickets.

The Road Trip.

What can I say. Everything went to plan, we didn't get lost, have any prangs or pick up any speeding tickets.

As I have mentioned next door (on the wrong day - I have only just been able to view todays???), the overriding theme was contrast.

Seattle was a lovely place to start. We were upgraded to a suite in a very nice hotel and we spent a couple of days 'flashpacking' I believe the phrase is. Basically revisiting places but on a slightly healthier budget! Things really got going when we hit the road as we took off into the Washington mountains, specifically Mount Rainier. We hadn't reckoned on roads being closed because of snow in June, but sure enough, our route was impassable. This meant a 200 mile diversion, but with scenery like that, it really doesn't matter.

Once on the coast we were treated to mile upon mile of stunning rugged coastline along the Oregon stretch into northern California where the added bonus were the Redwood forests. With some classic driving music blaring, life really couldn't get much better. We put in some major miles one day as we kept stumbling across old logging towns that really weren't the places you'd want to stay. As the day turned into evening, a night in the 'truck' (a very large 4x4 - don't start on me about carbon footprints) beckoned. Just as we were losing all hope we stumbled into Mendocino, a charming hippie-type of town that boasts the most incredible coastline. And, it happens to be the veggie capital of the US! Heaven! We stayed a couple of nights as it was so good.

Onto San Francisco and we treated ourselves to a couple of nights in The Fairmont. This is a proper hotel perched up on Nob Hill. Now, if you've ever been to SF you'll know that walking around can be a bit of a workout, when you are staying at the top of the hill your legs know about it.

The one disappointment for me was Yosemite. Don't get me wrong, it is awesome, but it has become the world's most scenic car park. Given more time you can get away from the crowds, but on a fleeting visit you just get caught up in miles upon miles of RVs queuing up for a quick snap of El Capitan and then a hamburger.

Death Valley was fabulous. By the time we reached Stovepipe Wells in the centre the mercury was pushing 118 degrees. At 4.00pm. In the shade. It was like climbing out of the car to face fifty people pointing hairdryers at you. We stayed at a place called Furnace Creek. 'Nuff said.

And then to Vegas. It was my 5th time, but it is always fun for a couple of days. On Sunday we took in The Beatles Cirque du Soleil show. We saw a CdS show in London a few years ago and I could take it or leave it, but this was brilliant. Honestly, if you go to LV, don't miss it.

Now we're back in Rudgwick with a mountain of washing, jet lag and a pile of credit card receipts.

But it was all worth it.

Jollygit,

What can I say? I am so sorry to hear about your friend's son. Why is life so cruel? This is horrendous for your friends and all you can do is be there. I know from terrible experience that people get so embarrassed and don't know what to say. Say anything - I promise you it will be better than silence. My nephew who is now 40, was hit my a car when he was 12. He's still 12 because of the brain damage. Many of my brother's friends abandoned them because of embarrassment, but all my brother was looking for was "I'm so sorry to hear what happened". Very difficult Jollygit, but I know that you will be there for them.

What a week - I am sending lots of love and prayers to everyone who needs them.

Welcome Home EG :o)

Quick update from me - scary meeting was an absolute waste of time....How is my horrible manager so bloody incompetent? It must be something about the public sector and how they promote people from within the organisation! Nothing changed as a result, she just seems surprised that I will still accrue annual leave throughout my maternity leave!

Physio on the other hand seem sto think that I am likely to fall apart at the seams. Well at all the major joints! It seems that I am borderline hypermobile (hyper anything really) which means that the ligaments holding my joints together are quite lax - being pregnant makes this worse so everything is just hanging in there, quite literally by a thread.

The upside is that I can still touch my toes and bend it, shake it, anyway you want it! (I knew Mr Jo married me for a reason)

Downside is that it will only get worse form here but oh well - what's a girl to do.

2 weeks till French Holiday then after that it's 4 weeks till I finish work, and I really can't wait!

PS Jollygit, thoughts with your friend, I hope lighting the candle helped.

Apparently people with HMS are usually rather supple, although these days I can't touch me toes unless I'm sitting down, but that's 'cos me tum gets in the way!!! I take multi-vitamins, and a calcium/magnesium/vitamin D combo which seem to be helping. I hope you're feeling OK xxxx

Hazel - Fortunately my teenage and university joints were perfectly formed and never fell apart - they even were slightly cone shaped...Is it a skill to be proud of, as I am quite proud!

Braincells are currently seeping away like yoghurt through a seive... It took me ages to come up with that analogy!

Jollygit, my physio gave me the best advice ever, when people tell you to stand up or sit up straight - don't, just go half way!

EG!!! So good to see you. You must be knackered working so hard -I hope you are managing to have the odd glass of wine to keep you going!

Well, I lit a candle last night, sat it at the window and thought of everyone on the blog and what's been happening this week. It really helped me feel calmer.
Ms S stayed overnight at her friend's so Mr S and I opened a bottle of wine, stood in the kitchen talking and watched the clouds roll by. It's amazing just how much nonsense you can talk about over a bottle of wine!

Jollygit - when did your friend get away yesterday, do you know? What a nightmare being stuck at the airport - I'm actually quite relieved we have no money to go away this year - at least I don't have to face the airport, security at all that jazz!

Jo - good grief! Is there nothing the medical profession can do to help? I see though that Jollygit has some suggestions, I hope this will help. However, it is fair to say that you are sounding very upbeat!

And, Jo, your manager sounds like an absolute nutter! She's a real diamond, isn't she? Typical boss though, it's o.k. for them to take all the holidays they want but if I ask for two hours to keep a doctor's appointment, I get the cold shoulder treatment! Isn't it great that she can't do a thing about your holiday entitlement accruing!

As you can see, I'm in quite a talkative mood!

jollygit said...

Chrissie - my friend's flight was only delayed by about half an hour and I think she might have just managed to get away before the nightmare and chaos began! I'm awaiting an email from her to confirm she's safely back in Saskatoon ....

Heathrow has a self-check-in system in place now and luckily it was very quiet at the Air Canada desk, so we worked our way through the system together .... when we head off to NZ in January I'll at least be able to work out how to do it! You get your boarding passes printed out, having scanned your passport yourself, and then you have to queue to drop off your luggage. I'm sure it'll save time in the long run but I can see tempers flaring in the summer - whenever that deigns to arrive!!

Love 'n hugs to everyone and let's hope the sunshine lasts today. Jo's right - it makes everything seem just that wee bit brighter.

ChrissieS, bless you being so chatty. Have to say am a tad concerned that Mr S DID check with the pharmacist that he is able to take alcohol with his anti-bs?

It's odd. We got the keys last night. It is a little damp with what seems to be inadequate ventilation and night storage heaters, but it'll smell of us soon enough I'm sure...Having badgered it with a ruler we have worked out that most of our furniture will fit in too. (I am going somewhere with this by the way)

...ANYWAY...All this moving thing has been a tad traumatic what with it being the 12,000,000 time we've moved in the past couple of years, and I am SOOOOO grateful to all of you for being so brilliant (I promise this is going somewhere) and last night (nearly there) after we got the keys, it was a bit late to hoover or start moving stuff, so me and the boy had the BIGGEST, TIGHTEST breath-squeezing cuddle we have had for AGES, because it all really WILL be all right. (As a vague link, this was kind of in lieu of wine or candles, although we did share a can of lager a bit later)

I really feel for all of you out there who have got sad or unhappy things going on in your lives, (as I don't seem (to me) to have a particularly valid reason to feel like I do) and I really, REALLY hope that somehow it is going to be all right for everybody.

Feck it. Now I've made myself cry. Am going to go to the Naughty Corner and think about what I've done.

****

Later the same day. Am now pulled together. Have used hypermobility assisters and am zooming about like a blue-bottomed fly...am also covered in nose-blown tissue, but that's not for here.

Anyhoo...TOMORROW IS MY LAST DAY AT WORK UNTIL NEXT THURSDAY AND I THINK IT'S TIME FOR A PARTY...obviously if that is ok with Moose?

So. In Court No.1 at 1.30 tomorrow please bring what you like as long as it includes strawberries, cream, caster sugar, champagne, cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut orf, adidas and balls.

Jollygit,

Very interesting about the self check-in thingy. If this trend continues, it would seem that Ms S's plans of working for ground crew at the airport will be scuppered! She quite sees herself working at check-in, allocating the best seats to the people she likes the look of! For a while the plan was to be an air steward, but as she is afraid of flying, she decided ... perhaps not!

Glad some of you have the sun - it's freezing here and cloudy and actually the sort of day when you wish you were at home, eating toast and watching Calamity Jane! (other cheesy musicals available).

I got myself all mixed up - I thought you were getting the keys tonight. As you are only too well aware, it's always strange moving somewhere new. But in no time it will be home and as long as you're both together and still cuddling, it will be just fine!

I am so looking forward to the party tomorrow, as of course I stop work tomorrow night for two weeks. I can't wait! So, yes, I will bring the strawberries and a special bottle of Rose Champagne as nothing else will do! (better make it a couple of bottles).

Incidentally, Mr S did ask his lovely nurse if it would be o.k. to have a glass or two of wine and she said, yes, but wait a couple of days. Result - he lasted 36 hours!! It should be o.k. though. I hope!

Thanks all for the welcome back. Am a bit out of practice here so having read the comments can't think of a smart thing to say - nothing new there then! Just enjoying being back in it.

And yes, I'm still managing to consume the odd glass/bottle/vat of vino. Was actually away with work last week and stayed up too late at the bar and had one,two maybe even three glasses of wine too many (not something I would normally do at a work thing). I suffered next day. Not good when giving presentations - the panic of will I get through this before I vomit - I shudder just thinking about it.

Oh well - that's me lowered the tone.

Gaviscon and Rennies standing by! EG - speaking of vomit! Am v. tired this moring due to random vomit session in the night.... Why is it that when you're sick you also, automatically go very cold and have uncontrollable shivers?? I don't understand?

I remember, back in the day having to stop the car on the way to work so I could spew in the grass verge! Tequila does NOT mix with anything! Similarly excesses of Tia Maria & Coke aren't that great either. And should your aim not be great I wouldn't really recommend Snakebite & Black. Terrible stainage!

Looks like the tone of the day has been set!!!!!!

Ooh, looking forward to our party at 1.30 and the Pimms is chilling nicely - now all I've got to do is chop up some fruit.

Heavens to Murgatroid!

I settle down with my bacon roll to read the blog from late yesterday/early this morning. What are we talking about? Vomit! The good news is that I suddenly lost my appetite and only ate half of the roll - thanks, you guys!

Well, I danced in here this morning. I stop tonight for two whole weeks - I am excited beyond belief. Although we can't go away on holiday, there is so much I want to do. We are going to take two days and be "tourists" in Glasgow. Really see some of the place, do the bus tour, etc. Also, Glasgow has some incredible museums and architecture, but I never have time to look at any of it.

My boss told me yesterday there is an extra £500 in my salary this month as a Summer Bonus, so I am really delighted! (it will be taxed, of course). So this means we can at least have an overnight somewhere and we'll be able to treat ourselves to a really nice dinner/lunch/whatever. You know, it's not until you actually don't have any money that you appreciate how handy it is!!

Hope everyone is o.k. Really looking forward to the party, in between clearing my desk. I think I may have to "hide" one or two things which will get attended to on my return!!

Be back later.

EG, I thought, just for one minute, you were gonna break into Tommy Cooper there...bottle, glass, glass, bottle etc...ah well, vat will do nicely sir...

Yeah Jo, someone once told me that tequila mixes with lemonade. I think I mentioned to her later that all it mixed with was what may have been left in my stomach, but I couldn't make it out in the dark...however kalhua(sp?) and coke (can't abide tia maria...too bitter me darlin'...) just kept me awake. Until Tuesday.

Anyhoo, there will be none of that after our terribly sedate 'do' this afternoon...

Good grief, I step away from the computer for a day or so and then there's so much to catch up on ...

Is the party still on for 1.30? I'll be there. Sun's currently shining in Bath so no need for the scout hut down here.

And just to add to the previous comments about v*m*t - many years agao when I were nobbut a girl, and a student nurse to boot, my friend and I went out for a few (!) drinks. She was on lager and blackcurrant which, when returned plus additives (diced carrots, tomato skins, etc) resembles the stomach contents of someone with a bleeding gastric ulcer. Or at least that's what we thought. We were drunk and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing! She worried all night (it was her stomach after all) until sober reality kicked in and she remembered the blackcurrant. As far as I know she's never touched it again in the 25 years since.

Anonymous said...

dearest analog, of COURSE the party is still going ahead. I'm just fastening the paper table cloths with staples as we speak. As far as the Scouts are concerned, they are just a-dibbing and a-dobbing in case we need to use their lavvy. They have removed all traces of Izal and replaced with face and bottom friendly triple quilted kleendrex as instructed at the previous committee meeting. In fact, there is a labrador puppy in there at the moment making sure that it is of the specified softness.

There will also be a bucket.

Analog - I've had similar experiences with rum & black, Southern Comfort & lemonade and Merrydown cider (not all at the same time, I hasten to add - I'm bad, but not that bad!). I am now unable to even smell these drinks without feeling squeezy ...... funnily enough, and thankfully, that's never been a problem with red wine, no matter how poorly I've been on it!!!!

Looking forward to our lunch .....

Well done on finding a spare bucket, Hazel - I thought they were all being used to catch the rain coming through the Scout hut roof!

TGIF everyone! Only an hour and a bit to go. Have a couple of bottles of pink and fizzy in the fridge and have chopped some strawberries, cucumber and mint for whoever has the Pimms.

As we're on the subject of vomit, my first alcohol and "V" experience was on cherry B and cider (other wise known in the migerlands as a legover) not pretty, I thought I was dying! Didn't put me off alcohol much is the pity, could have saved myself a fortune!

It's time for...

FRIDAY INFO FILE

It is a fact (allegedly) generally hidden from the Great British public that any type of black currant cordial (including the questionable 'tooth-kind) can cause massive upset with the digestive acids within the human stomach. This is usually exacerbated by the addition of alcohol, but if I were you, I'd just avoid it as a matter of course.

If you are in possession of a suitably high quality alcoholic beverage, imbibe it WITHOUT black currant, and not only will your v*m*t be purple-free, you may also not suffer from a hangover the following day.

If however you purchase either value bottles or R3D TZAR SPESIAL VOTKA then you only have yourselves to blame.

This would also apply to Captain Morton Rum, Jim Bean and Jack Spaniel's. Still, I suppose what you save on the bottle, you can spend on alka seltzer...or lose it on the roundabouts...

Thank you for your time.

Just setting off now for the "do". Will nip into local PYO and get some fresh berries.

Have just re-read Hazel's party instructions and realised that the Badedas bath foam is probably not what she meant. I'll bring it anyway. Things happen in a Badedas bath apparently.

jollygit said...

Chrissie - before the party really gets going and we all get tiddly, just want to say that I hope you have a lovely two weeks off work. Well done on your summer bonus too!!!

The Pimms jug is so blimmin cold that I'm using oven gloves to take it out of the fridge, but I'm on me way!

Let's get this party started ....

I've just found a bottle of bombay sapphire for anyone that fancies a gin pimms! Chin chin dharliks!

Jo said...

Yum, gin...count me in. I'm watching the skies and it seems that we may have to invade the Scout hut soon. As long as people keep there hands to themselves and don't steal the scouts' woggles I'm sure we'll all have a swinging time!

Rightio then - anyone for Pimms with a gaviscon chaser?

PS - Don't fancy yours much!

Have already slipped over TOTALLY SOBER in what appears to be herby foam...is this anything to do with you analog?

Anyhoo, big pop, and a big poppy bubbly CHEERS to you all. The strawbleberries are all de-hulled (other northern cities available) and ready for creaming.

First service!

Sorry - the lid came loose in transit and some bubble bath leaked out. If it wasn't so wet under foot no-one would have noticed. I'll go and find a mop.

Anonymous said...

Chrissie, indeed well done on your bonus! Really good timing for your hols too...I've lived in Brighton (Well Hove Actually) for two years (and by Brighton for longer than I care to remember) and have NEVER been round it as a tourist! International Badger Rescue have organised a Summer Outing for me and the boy (to be taken if and when the summer ever gets here) for precisely the same reason that you are 'doing' Glasgow! Good on ya kiddo...and don't make Mr S walk too far...

Pass the gin please, my punch is a bit weak. And who put mince in the Pimms?

lyndyloo said...

Bargain! I've always wanted to go to a foam party! *pop* another one goes off in my hand!
oops! seems that might have hit Akela who I'm not sure was aware of our impending jamboree!

jollygit said...

Oi Love - you sayin' my Pimms is gay?

I think it's great being a tourist in your home town ...... I'd lived in Brighton AND Hove for nearly 20 years before I finally set foot in the Royal Pavilion!

Boy, it's frothy man!

Jo said...

Ladies be aware that the last foam party I went to concluded with a trip to A&E (other vowels are available) for some stiches in my foot. Watch out for broken bottles and random bits of sharp stuff on the floor!

Lyndyloo, it seems that Akela is quite astonished at the impromptu jamboree, do you think we should loosen his tie and allow him to work towards his PARTY ON badge??

:o) Jo

Anonymous said...

Couldn't find a mop. Sorry. Looks like I should leave the foam anyway - it's brightened up the Scout Hut no end.

Oi! who threw that? If you don't want the cucumber in your Pimms please return it to the punch bowl. thank you.

jollygit said...

Sorry Analog, it was meant for Akela ........

Anonymous said...

Am actually banned for life from the Royal Pavillion after climbing on the roof in 1979 and shouting 'Who's Queen!' at Larry Grayson.

Jo, I have A&E on the phone wanting to know how to make a Gin Sling. I've told them to hold it in their right hand and just chuck it if that's ok?

Can someone pass the sandwiches please? Eversoslightly peckish... and the champers is giving me hiccups. Perhaps if I don't fill my glass quite to the brim I won't spill it every time one happens...

...and cocktail sticks? For crying out loud Olive!

Anonymous said...

Babes, have to go into the other office now, so am gonna take Jeraboam with me. (He's an up and coming Polish tennis player if anyone cares) Will be back soon as can...ooops

Anonymous said...

Can I have my son back? He's due on court later this afternoon and will need a nap before he goes out.

Jo said...

Is there any pimms left? Can I sieve the fruit out for health benefits? Also, at our next party are we allowed to make the Jamie Oliver (pukka) watermelon / Vodka thingy? Much better way of getting your 5 a day!

Hazel, have you finished with the tennis player yet?

Is everyone lost in the foam?

:o) Jo

lyndyloo said...

Good grief, I thought I was never going to be let up for air! This bubbly in the bubbly is a smashing way to start the weekend! And has HL made off with the sandwiches? I'm sure the strawberries and cucumber count as at least 2 of my 5 a day but could do with a few nuts (good for protein don't you know?) ...now where has that tennis player gorn?

Moose - hope you had a good trip and the jet lag isn't too bad!

Chrissie - Have a great holiday and hope Mr S leg is better in time for the museum and gallery visits. Also praying your friend will pull through.

Hazel - I really hope it doesn't rain on your house move - good luck and hope this time things will settle down for you. Just read next door and that's naff to hear about the deposit - will you get anything back on the house you are moving from?

Jollygit - sorry to hear about your bad news this week and hope the lads parents are coping in such devastating circumstances.

Will leave you all with my best wishes for a fantabulous weekend and here is something funny:

Morris and his wife Esther went to the seaside every year, and every year Morris would watch the helicopter giving pleasure flights and say,

"Esther, I'd like to ride in that helicopter." Esther always replied,
"I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is fifty quid, and fifty quid is fifty Quid."

One year Morris said, "Esther, I am 85 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance."

To this, Esther replied, "Morris that helicopter is fifty quid, and
fifty quid is fifty quid."

The pilot happened to be walking by and overheard the couple and
said,"Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word, i won't charge you! But if you say one word, it's fifty quid."

Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvres and tricks, but not a word was heard. he did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.

When they landed, the pilot turned to Morris and said, "By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm so impressed!"

Morris replied, "Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Esther fell out, but you know, fifty quid is fifty quid."

Hellooooo!

I'm so sorry I missed the party, but my boss took me for lunch! Do you think I am heading for a fall? First a Summer bonus and then pre-holiday lunch?! This has NEVER happened before!!

Went to a fabulous Italian restaurant in Buchanan Street - it's called Caprese - pronounced "Capreysay" - if anyone is heading to Glasgow, please go there! Bottle of Frascati, I am now a gibbering idiot and will have to hide even more stuff than I first thought this morning!

Thank you for all your good wishes - I really will enjoy my break, but I can't guarantee I will stay away from the blog - is that o.k?!

Amanda - I loved your joke! It's a fine line between love and hate!

Be back soon.

Jo - I didn't steal his woggle - I just .... no, I can't say, it's all too embarrassing ....

Jollygit - can you give him his woggle back now? His tie's come loose and he's looking a bit dishevelled ...

Is this what Ian Hislop's Scouting for Boys was like???

Has anyone found that tennis player? His mum's gonna go mad if he doesn't have a nap before his match.

Good luck with the move Hazel - will keep everything crossed for dry weather. And everyone else have a great weekend.

jollygit said...

Analog - oh OK, here it is. So that was his tie was it? Ho hum ..

Hazel - the very best of luck with the move and hoping and praying that the rain keeps off just long enough xxxx

Have a good weekend everyone

One and all,

Have a great weekend. I will undoubtedly "pop in" to say hello next week in between museum and art gallery visits.

Moose, we have missed you so much. Don't try to fight the jet lag, go with the flow. Hope your trip was fantastic!

Hazel - you are in my thoughts - just find the nearest skip and throw all the black bags in it. I promise you will miss nothing!

To everyone else, thank you so much for this week - I really don't know what I would have done without you - taken to drinking Frascati, no doubt. Actually, I've done that anyway!

Just a quick word to say I'm back safe and sound, apart from enormous blisters from too much walking around Boston and Cambridge in unsuitable shoes and a stinking cold from going from 95 degree naturally heated exteriors into super-cooled artificial interiors.

Haven't had time to read everything - will catch up after the mooselets are in bed and I have some wine in front of me...

Hi Moose - welcome home.

All - sorry I missed the party today but glad I started the vomit - you know what I mean! One of my worst (and yet there are so many to choose from) was after drinking Pink Panthers - can't remember if it was lager or cider mixed with blackcurrent. Anyway, it came back up as cremola foam!! Lovely.

So on that low note I will skidadle off again. Have a great weekend everyone.
