Obvious

Although somewhat nervous of repeating myself, even at the grand young age of 40, today appears to be a day of so-called academics stating the bleedin' obvious in the news:

Additives are bad for kids and make them hyperactive. Really? So that could be why the mooselets run around like mad things after a couple of Smarties. Doh, I was wondering!

Binge-drinking is bad for everyone and leads to "social problems" later in life. Yeah? And what about the more immediate social problems of pools of sick and blood in our city and town centres, STIs and teenage pregnancies following the drinking sessions, the use of valuable NHS resources for all the fight injuries, not to mention the mere existence of Doner Kebab vans? Oh and the unavoidable and incredibly offputting sight of exposed pale flabby stomachs hanging over low slung belts, male and female...

The additives thing reminds me of a little story from our holiday. We were at the pool with our friends in LA when a group starting unloading a trailer full of "goodies" for a kid's birthday party. The only drinks were carbonated 2 litre bottles of additive-infused sugar water and the cake was enormous, divided into eight sections, each of which was plastered with a different brightly coloured icing mountain, each colour bearing no relation whatsoever to anything from the natural world. We got out of their way rather quickly... I fear that the levels of hyperactivity after that lot would have been truly anti-social. Pools of some sort of nasty bodily fluids (are there any other type?) were probably apparent later in the day...

In more local and private news, Mooselet #2 started school today. He's been looking forward to it so much...the memory of him in his new school uniform standing proudly outside the front door will last a lifetime. It's really quite sad to read stories in the news relating to the stress that some kids seem to have put on them by their parents - I can't imagine how else a 4 year old would know it might be something to get stressed about - when the only stress he was suffering was having to wait two extra days after his brother went back before he could go to school too!

ChrissieS - sorry but I feel an appalling sense of historic duty (and a very real sense of protecting the financial value of my portfolio of shares!) to say...other supermarkets are also available and also stock a fine range of gluten-free products!!!

Moose - congratulations on Mooselet # 2's first day at school. I hope he's really happy there.

That reminds me of my nephew who, after returning home from his first day at school, said to his mum "wow mum, that was a really good day ....... where are we going tomorrow?"

HL is slightly off-colour at the mo, but will be back with us very soon. She sends her love to everyone xx

Happy thirsty Thursday everyone.

apologies for being too supermarket specific - it's just that I live 200 yards from the "S" variety and can rarely be *rsed to walk any further ... as Moose said, others are available and stock fine ranges of products.

On the subject of additives and hyperactivity - there was something on teh TV recently where they tested a bunch of kids by feeding them sugar/additive infused food at one party that had a relaxing sort of entertainment and then healthy stuff at a second party where the kids were allowed to run riot and get over excited by a different entertainer. The parents were then questioned about the state of their kids when they took them home and to draw a conclusion about what they were fed. They all decided that it was the fault of the food at the second party that made their kids hyperactive and that they must have been fed healthy stuff at the first one. and they were all wrong! I'm not saying stuff your kids with sugar and additives, but they can't be blamed for all the hyperactive kids in the world. Can they?

Moose - lovely to hear about Mooselet #2. What an exciting day for him! Isn't it good that he is completely unaware that he has a good 12-14 years of this ahead?!

And you are so right about stating the obvious - but isn't it amazing just how thick people can be, giving their children yellow sweets and drinks and then being baffled when the kids are on the ceiling!

And, with you in mind, I will spend some of my hard-earned in the other supermarkets too!

Jollygit - thanks for the update on HL. She's a wee pet lamb.

Lyndyloo and Analog - thank you both - I feel so much calmer now!

Hello All!

Moose - in response to your previous 'Moosings' - "there are lies, damn lies and statistics", as you well know! Turn the stats around to suit you - everyone else does!

As for today - happy to report that local LEA did eventually get their act together and my best boy did in actual fact start at his new school on Tuesday - 3 days after term started. He loooooves it - much happier than at his previous school, so I feel much happier.

Work is incredibly stressful at the moment. In fact, I am still working now, but the telecon I am dialled into is sooooooooooooo boring, I had to blog on!

Hope you're all fine and dandy - will try to catch up at some point - the good news is that I do have a quiet weekend planned - watching rugby tomorrow night, bike ride Saturday morning, followed by the usual chores, watching rugby, then taking my son to rugby training on Sunday morning - v v v quiet in comparison to recent weekends!

Love and kisses,

S xx.

Yahoo, it's Friday!

Sammie & Caroline - good to hear from you both.

We watched Who Do You Think You Are last night - I was slightly reluctant due to the fact that I really cannot stand Natasha Kaplinsky (sp?). However, it was fascinating and harrowing to hear the stories of some of her family dying at the hands of the Nazis. I was crying at one point. Absolute horror beyond words.

Still, I managed to have two wee (well, large) glasses of wine just to calm the old nerves!

I am going with my sister tomorrow to see Hobson's Choice in Glasgow. It's starring the guy who was Fred in Coronation Street, so it is to be hoped that he doesn't repeat every line twice. I say, every line twice! (pathetic, I know).

Hope everyone is ok today.

hello everyone

chrissie - I saw him (john, ithink his name is, who played fred in corrie) on Richard and judy being interviewed about the part, and he's everso posh! a real plummy accent! The play sounded v.v. good. Hope it is.
I'm off work today, but was sending an e mail and had 5 spare minutes..so i thought i'd pop in. Now off to the gym, the the T supermarket, pick apples, make tea, pick child and friend from school, have an apple stall on the street ( really lowers the tone!) then bliss, of blisses a bucket of wine! Have a good weekend everyone

Moose, how was first day..?

Analog- Have a great holiday!

I've moved offices today and it seems that the people that sold us the phone system in the new offices has had us over! The BT man has told us we can't use the phones or the system without taking on the contract and the people have cancelled the contract. How very rude!!

Apart from that it's dead posh! I've got my own new desk in a great big office with Ruthy (& Jon when he's over here). We get to look out at all the goings on in the streets (we're in a corner office) I'm wondering how we'll ever get any work done between people watching. On the basis that I work from my laptop when I'm in Leicester I only had to worry about stting up the wireless router and plugging myself in, which was a piece of cake! Hmmmm talking of cake..... think I'll go put the kettle on.

Qui mange tout les gateaux?

Hi all,

There's no stopping mooselet #2. He stood up in front of the whole school at assembly today and told them about our summer holiday. "We went to the Grand Canyon and drove all around it," were his lines...which he apparently delivered flawlessly.

Not bad for your second day! Only 2 of the reception class did it. And he's one of the youngest. Shame I missed it. He told us yesterday that he was doing it and we should have had more faith. We thought it was a "might" and unlikely. Then his teacher told Mrs M this morning, just before the assembly, that he was quite right and it was on. I was already in the car too far in the other direction to make it back in time to see him.
