It's only sport...

Hard to believe I know but it really is only sport. It's not life and death. And no, I'm afraid Bill Shankly was either wrong or, what I believe to be more likely, he was only joking! The problem is that so many people have picked up on his famous words (just to let those who don't know in on it, he said "Some people think that football is a matter of life and death. It's not, it's more important than that," (apologies if the quote is not 100% accurate) and treated them as some great piece of wisdom to justify their obsession with what is, I repeat, ONLY SPORT!!!

So sorry to any football fans out there feeling down, feeling depressed or feeling the cold feet of the woman they love against their (previously) warm leg. But trust me on this...you will get over it. Think of the schadenfreude you'll be able to enjoiy when McLaren gets the boot (or falls on his sword beforehand if he's got any sense - although that would cost him millions). Think of the pleasure of a European football championships without the stress of being robbed by dodgy refereeing decisions. Think of the early nights curled up in bed with the warm feet of the woman you love (the finals are in the summer after all, so the feet will either be warm or the cold ones will be rather pleasant as you lie there sweating). For the women football fans, just substitute the appropriate words "man" and "warm dangly bits" wherever you need to.

Just in case you missed the point of this post: IT'S ONLY SPORT!

Morning moose and all. I have to agree with you moose, and actually - i would go as far as to say this is a good thing for British Football. I hope that the industry will find such an allegedly shocking result a reason to be a little introspective for a while. Perhaps to take stock of their situation and maybe even start to realise that things have got just a little bit silly..... optimistic? Probably, but as much as the rugby was a challenge this summer and the cricket is always up and down - you'd never see either of those teams playing with such half heart, lack of committment and lack of idea about how to win.... before skipping back to their range rover sport/porsche cayenne (delete as appropriate) and home to count their cash.

Moose - ooooh, good topic! In my younger years I was a huge fan (naturally) of Scotland. I followed them faithfully and really, truly believed they would win the World Cup in 1978! Oh, the pain I have endured!

But now of course, I agree - it's only sport. You actually cannot die if your team loses a game - it just feels like you might!

Anna, your comment is absolutely spot on.

And as for Steve McClaren - I watched him very closely last night. I know he was facing his last chance for personal survival disappear. I understand that. But he stormed off at the end of the match, not even shaking hands with the opposing manager, let alone waiting for his team to come off the park and I just thought "you are a nasty piece of work, son". He certainly won't be missed.

Moose .... told you I liked this topic!

Oh Moose what have you done!

English Football – the problems
Too much money
Too much molly coddling
Too much belief that we are still a world power
Too much belief that our players are world class
Too much taking the fans for granted
Too much politics within the FA

Not enough work ethic
Not enough fighting spirit
Not enough acceptance that other teams are equally as good or better than us
Not enough tactical acumen within the coaching staff

Lost the connection to grass roots sport and supporters
Lost the spirit shown by players from the past (Emlyn Hughes, Bryan Robson, Stuart Pearce, Paul Ince, etc.)

Last night what was needed was a “thou shalt not pass”
“England Expects every man to do his duty!”
“Never in the field”, etc. attitude
What we got was pathetic, but we didn’t lose it last night, we lost it in Macedonia, and Croatia and Russia, when the same laissé faire, we are celebrities, we are England and therefore have a divine right to progress attitude did for us! Last night was just the final nail in a pre-prepared coffin!

It’s only a game though, nobody died, unlike in Italy the other week!

At least we can now have a Home Internationals tournament next Summer!

Good day to you all!

Oh it is quiet in here today. Anyhow - you are right it is only sport and as DD pointed out nobody died or got hurt and life goes on. It is disappointing but a sign of how English football is going down the pan currently.

Anyhow - I am giving due notice that I shall be absent from today until Tuesday or Wednesday next week. The time has arrived and we are finally moving offices. I am sure it will not go to plan so am looking forward to a stressful few days ahead!!!

So - well in advance I wish you all a good weekend and for those of you facing times of uncertainty or unhappiness I wish you peace and positive vibes.

For Chrissie S I wish lots of sangria during her trip to Barcelona!

Will pop in later if I have time, if not see you all next week sometime!

I agree entirely. It is only sport. No-one died.

Personally I agree with Laurence Dallaglio's comment about the football premiership (on Sunday's Top Gear) - he called it the Andrex Premiership - all very soft and ridiculously expensive (or words to that effect).

Good luck with the office move Amanda - I'm sure it won't be as bad as you expect!

Hello to everyone else ...

Hi Analog and Anna (again!).

Anna - even though I promised myself I would not watch "the jungle" I have found it almost impossible to resist! The "good" side of me does feel sorry for Marc - what a mess he has made. And (look away Moose, Keith and DD) he is only a man, after all! But it's not good enough, and I have to be honest I really could not forgive my partner being away from me for only 11 days and already being with someone else. The look on Marc's face as he crossed that bridge and he suddenly, terribly realised what he had done ... priceless!

Amanda - all the best with the office move. Nightmare City!! I will raise a glass or four of sangria to you and will no doubt pay the price the next day!

Can I plead complete ignorance and say I have absolutely no idea who Marc Bannerman is or what he's done. And if it's anything to do with that jungly thing, I have even less desire to find out ...
